Dmitri Hvorostovsky is one of the leading representatives of a generation of Russian singers who, unlike their immediate predecessors, have been able to establish themselves as international stars.
It was his stunning win in 1989 in the BBC's Cardiff Singer of the World competition that really thrust him into the limelight. He even managed to push local hero (and an equally outstanding bass-baritone) Bryn Terfel into second place.
His debut at London's Wigmore Hall and at New York's Alice Tully soon followed, as did, vitally, the beginning of a long relationship with Philips Classics in the shape of a recital of arias by Verdi and Tchaikovsky that set out clearly his strengths and two of the twin poles of his subsequent repertory.
This 2CD retrospective celebrates Hvorostovsky's great recordings for Philips Classics.
