"The recording is clear and well balanced with a touch of bloom around the voices...Puccini completists and Domingo fans need not hesitate."
(MusicWeb July 2006)

"The recording is clear and well balanced with a touch of bloom around the voices. Alberto Veronesi on the podium nurses the music through its thinner parts and doesn't overdo the drama. Puccini's use of motif is easily picked out in an interpretation that is appropriately delicate in the orchestral prelude to act three. There is an interesting booklet essay and synopsis in English, German and French and full libretto with translations in the same languages. It would have been helpful if the synopsis had been track-related. This recording and performance comfortably supersedes the Sony issue made from live concert performances in New York under Eve Queler with Renata Scotto and Carlo Bergonzi. Puccini completists and Domingo fans need not hesitate."

"The title-role is the only Puccini tenor lead role that Plácido Domingo has never sung until now. There is no hint of strain, and throughout an arduous three acts he used his voice with all his accustomed commitment and fervour. Domingo is well partnered by Marianne Cornetti as Tigrana and Adriana Damato Fidelia. Alberto Veronesi conducts an often exciting performance..."

Edgar is one of Puccini's early works, yet its music and style are remarkably advanced.

This studio recording features Plácido Domingo in the title role. The other three soloists are the 26-year-old soprano Adriana d'Amato (a recent "Operalia" winner who has just sung Violetta at the Met), the celebrated bass Juan Pons, and the mezzo Marianna Cornetti, who has frequently sung major Verdi roles. The Orchestra dell'Accademia di Santa Cecilia is conducted by Alberto Veronesi, chief conductor of the Orchestra Sinfonica Siciliana di Palermo as well as music and artistic director of the Puccini Festival in Torre di Lago.

Recently, at a London airport, an elderly woman recognized Plácido Domingo: "Why, you're Plácido Domingo, aren't you?" - "Yes", answered the tenor, "I am." "I'm so pleased to meet you. You are the greatest singer in the world!" said the woman, adding: "Please greet the others for me, too - Luciano Pavarotti, José Carreras. And give my special greetings to Maria Callas."
