MARBECKS STAFF RECORDING OF THE YEAR 2006
"Lush textures and profound expression in Pergolesi's famous last work...Some aspects are superbly judged: several ritornelli are perfectly weighted and the Ricercar Consort play with sensual warmth"
(The Gramophone)
We know very little about the life of Giovanni Battista Pergolesi, which contrasts strangely with the staggering fame of his music, as he died of tuberculosis at the age of twenty-six. His Stabat Mater remains the seminal work in an output of around a dozen religious pieces (oratorios,
masses, and motets). Composed at the same time as the Salve Regina, written for just one solo voice, it shares many similarities, both in its vocal coloration and in the emotional charge that radiates from the work as a whole.
