This second collection of collaborations, remixes and alternate takes serves as a testament, not only to the breadth of Alice Russell's appeal, but also to her versatility as an artist. From soul to jazz, from folk to funk, downbeat to broken beat, hip hop to reggae and even a little drum and bass for good measure, Alice switches genres with natural grace and style, aided and abetted by her musical co-conspirators.
The album's all-star lineup includes Bugz In The Attic, Bonobo, Nostalgia 77, Nu: Tone, DJ Vadim, Boub, TM Juke, Unforscene, Natural Self and Wyndham Earl. 'Under The Munka Moon 2' is also peppered with exclusive stripped-down live tracks, taken from both her solo albums [also 'My Favourite Letters'] which breathe new life into Alice's own back catalogue.
For all its glorious eclecticism, this new record has a distinct a sense of purpose and coherence that all compilations strive for but rarely ever achieve. The key to this is Alice Russell herself - whose breathtaking voice weaves the divergent styles and sounds of her collaborators together to produce an essential album for newcomers and longtime fans alike. This is a very special record indeed!
'Under The Munka Moon 2' features the DJ Vadim remix of "Fly In The Hand", her ripping version of the White Stripes' "Seven Nation Army" and new favourites "Could Heaven Ever Be Like This?" remixed by Bugz In The Attic and Bonobo's remix of Mirror Mirror On The Wolf "Tell The Story Right"'.
Alice cites such golden voices as Minnie Ripperton, Eva Cassidy, Stevie Wonder, Chaka Khan, Aretha Franklin and Jill Scott as her primary influences. An accomplished chanteuse, her sensual, sublime voice has seen her work on many different projects.
So, her solo albums aren't the only place to catch her at work: check her collaborations with Quantic, on such classics as 'Sweet Calling' and 'Search The Heavens', and more recently on QSO's debut funk bomb 'Stampede'. The tracks she features on include "Something That's Real" , "Take Your Time Change Your Mind" and the now classic, anthemic cover of 4Hero's gem "Hold It Down" - shaping a sound described by the Independent as "authentic funk with a modern twist". Further proof of Alice's undeniable talent.
"Alice's voice is spectacular, honest and heat-grabbing… people hear her sing and are smitten"
