Romanian pianist Clara Haskil was born in Bucharest on 7 January 1895. As a student at the Paris Conservatoire she was awarded a premier prix in 1909 and a year later she started her concert career. She worked with many of the greatest names of the period and her association with violinist Arthur Grumiaux resulted in a number of highly distinguished recordings of the Beethoven and Mozart Violin Sonatas.
An artist of the highest achievement, Haskil suffered from various health problems and died suddenly after a fall on 7 December 1960. Throughout the 1950s she made a number of recordings for Philips and this Original Masters set is devoted to the small number of solo recordings and concertos she made for the label.
