According to many music lovers The Netherlands are an 'organ paradise'. There are a large number of churches housing a multitude of historic organs. The organ built by Schnitger at the St. Laurens Church in Alkmaar is internationally famous. As is its organist Piet Kee.
This set of recordings features Kee at the keyboards in Alkmaar, where he has been organist for many years. The organ was built in 1639-46 and rebuilt almost a century later. So it is particularly suitable for performing music by Sweelinck (†1621), the master of Dutch organ composition.
In this Buxtehude year (200 years after his death) it is only fitting to issue some of his works performed by an expert on this very special organ. Both Buxtehude's and J.S. Bach's – who was clearly influenced by his colleague – music are well-suited to the St. Laurens' instrument.
Organist Piet Kee gives masterly executions with imaginative registrations of a variety of works, many of which are based on religious themes.
