"The piano sound on this Chandos disc is lovely as you would expect, and the big acoustic of St. Silas Church is not unattractive for Peter Pettinger's excellent pianism and musicianship. We can be grateful to both Chandos and Pettinger that so many rarely heard pieces are once again available to fans of Elgar, British music, and piano repertoire in general."

"A record which should be an essential part of the record collection of every real Elgar enthusiast."

'These fine pieces are expertly done by Peter Pettinger… full marks to Chandos…'

Returning to the Chandos catalogue are the performances by Peter Pettinger of Elgar's works for piano. The disc presents a comprehensive programme of Elgar's piano music, including unpublished or very little known original pieces for the instrument, together with the composer's own arrangements for piano of five orchestral pieces, including Dream Children and Carissima. Listening makes it clear that the works bear the hallmark of Elgar's genius, whether on the small scale suitable for the salon, or on the larger one represented by works such as In Smyrna and the virtuosic Concert Allegro.
Pettinger performs the pieces in chronological order, which makes fascinating listening, showing the gradual development and maturing of Elgar's characteristic style, and all are played with equal dedication and musicality, and a rare persuasiveness.
Pettinger has impeccable credentials on CD, having previously supported the violinist Nigel Kennedy in a recording of the Sonata for Violin and Piano, Op. 83, and his great sensitivity and technical accomplishment are evident throughout.
