This highly individual album features a new generation of Russian electronic musicians - a tribute to 'Space Age' 60s soundtracks paired with present-day sampling and crossover techniques.
Russian electronic music dates back to Lev Termen's 1920 invention of the theremin, and continued throughout the 50s and 60s as much 'Space Age' music was created for radio, television, and science fiction movies with fantastic soundtracks merging Easy Listening, Electronic Psychedelia and Beat.
This album features a new generation of Russian electronic musicians - a tribute to those 60s soundtracks paired with present-day sampling and crossover techniques. Igor Vdovin sends Russian sailors to Brazil and a gypsy band to outer space, Dima Vikhornov and Snegopady demonstrate what Russian folk music might sound like when played by Martians, veteran DJs Krugozory confront pompous military marches with nursery rhymes and a bit of light Soviet jazz, and Messer Chups pass Tchaikovsky's 'Nutcracker' into alien hands.
This highly individual music, located somewhere between lounge, easy listening and radical experimentation, is a mix of old and new, mysterious East and modern Europe. Welcome to Café Sputnik. Take off and enjoy!
