"THE American violinist Maude Powell was born in the 'wild west' in 1867 into a musical family. A prodigy, she was sent to Leipzig, Paris and Berlin, where she studied under the great Joseph Joachim. Making her debut at 18, she was soon appearing with the top European and American orchestras. She died of a heart attack when on tour in 1920 at the age of 52. These vibrant transfers of the 78s she made during the first two decades of the 20th century demonstrate just how superb an artist she was, with some magical playing.
