This chance recording of the great cellist Du Pre occurred because some bright engineer turned on the microphone during a rehearsal with conductor Adrian Boult. Boult leads the orchestra with sensitivity that catches fire when Du Pre enters on "Don Quixote." The somewhat wooden orchestral moments of the Lalo Cello Concerto melt away under Du Pre's close-mic intensity
