'[Duo concertante] Written in Martinu's best 1930s concerto grosso style, its three movements are limpidly scored, allowing the flowing, interweaving lines of the soloists to sound to best advantage; as the excellent booklet-notes say, "an extraordinary musical experience" … This disc is an utter delight from start to finish' (Gramophone)

"This is a propitious start in what looks like being a must-have series for the Martinů adherent. The engineering has placed the soloists - all highly, indeed admirably characterful - in close-up which means that some orchestral detail is occasionally obscured. I happen to like this immediacy of sound, feeling it suits the nature of the works, but I suspect that others will find it overdone."

This recording is the first volume of a four-disc survey of Martinuo's complete output for solo violin and orchestra-a project of lasting importance, containing some first recordings. The Czech violinist Bohuslav Matoušek is one of the foremost living exponents of this music.
