Trabaci: Keyboard Music (Book II, 1615)

In the appendix to his Scherzi Musicali Claudio Monteverdi wrote his own self-defence to the criticisms made against him by the theorist Artusi, though he had it signed by his brother Giulio Cesare. There he clearly speaks of a 'second practice' of composition, on the principle that certain rules had to be overcome if one wished to express the affect of the text.
