Straddling a fine line between absurdity and genius, Devin Townsend returns with this metal concept album - All hail Ziltoid!
Straddling a fine line between absurdity and genius, Mr. Townsend returns with this metal concept album! If the name Devin Townsend isn't familiar to you already, here's a little background on this Canadian indie legend…
Beginning in his teens with his band Noisescapes, Devin was headhunted by guitarist Steve Vai as a vocalist on his huge album 'Sex & Religion' and the accompanying world tour. Following this, Devin began touring with The Wildhearts, contributed guitar to albums by Front Line Assembly and formed Strapping Young Lad, while other solo projects were also undertaken; including the pop punk parody album 'Cooked On Phonics' under the name Pünky Bruster.
Over the years Devin has become known for creating a completely new studio and touring band for each solo release, and has stated that his more mellow music will be released by himself; whilst the more angry stuff by Strapping Young Lad. He's also experimented with electronica, initially with the 'Project EKO' EP, more recently with the dark ambient record 'Devlab', while his latest ambient electronic album was released late in '06, and is called 'The Hummer'.
Following a hiatus after the birth of his son and the release of 'The Hummer', Devin announced that he was back in his home studio writing & recording material for yet another new project! This new album was tentatively titled 'The Mighty Masturbator', but has recently been renamed 'Ziltoid the Omniscient'.
'Ziltoid the Omniscient' is a solo concept. Devin describes it as being a mix between Strapping Young Lad and The Devin Townsend Band, with a storyline like that of Punky Brüster's 'Cooked on Phonics'. All the music is written, mixed, produced and performed by Devin.
The basic premise is this: Ziltiod the Omniscient, a 4th dimensional alien, has come to earth and is currently hovering 5 miles above Qatar. Beaming messages to the earth including video, music & words, his Omniscient-ness has one dimension up on us humans, allowing him control over time. But, in order to bend time he requires the perfect fuel - black coffee - found in abundance on only one planet in the Omniverse… Earth. He plays guitar & sings, he is moody and a just a little bit sensitive... All hail Ziltoid and his infinity metal!
