Ataulfo Argenta (1913-1958) was Spain's leading conductor from 1947 to his tragically early death in 1958. He made nearly 50 recordings of zarzuelas and Spanish repertoire for Spanish Colombia and mainstream classical works in Paris, London and Geneva for Decca which was on-going. The CD is being released to mark the 50th anniversary of Argenta's death in January 1958.
This Falla collection recorded live in Paris in 1957 is very highly regarded in Spain as representing the very best of Argenta in his compatriot's music. The atmosphere is electric throughout. The tape has been available before but here has been re-mastered again by Tony Faulkner to improve the original quality of the broadcast. The performances also benefit from the appearance of the young Teresa Berganza in El Amor Brujo and La Vide Breve.
Two stereo bonus tracks have been transferred from LP of the composer Breton.
