Martucci wrote 'absolute' music which is not based on any extra-musical ideas. He often conducted Wagner's music. There are, however, no Wagnerian traces in his own works. In his compositions Martucci's style is more based on the tradition of Beethoven, Schumann and Brahms. Toscanini conducted many of his works.

Giuseppe Martucci (1856-1909) started out as a (child prodigy) pianist of international stature. At 25 though he exchanged the piano for the baton. Almost 10 years earlier had already put his first compositions for piano to paper. Many more were to follow.

Among these are also a number of works for orchestra, including two symphonies and two piano concertos. His smaller orchestral pieces such as the (in Italy) very popular Notturno and Novelletta -orchestrations by Martucci himself of two of his piano pieces - are of an attractive lightweight character reminiscent of Elgar.
