"For two decades, Marilyn Crispell has been one of the most highly regarded pianists at the sharp end of contemporary jazz."
- The Guardian

Marilyn Crispell (born 1947 in Philadelphia) quickly became one of the most sought after improvising pianists in new jazz with a strongly physical style. She was a member of the Anthony Braxton Quartet from 1978 to 1993. Crispell made her ECM label debut in 1996 when she recorded 'Nothing Ever Was, Anyway', which was very well received, collecting an album of the year prize in France, and Jazzman's "Choc de l'année 1997". She has released two more albums on the label both with her own trio.

'Vignettes' is her first ECM solo album and an important addition to the ranks of classic solo piano discs. The music of 'Vignettes' is a new direction in the music of this great American pianist, embracing tonality and form. The album is a poetic, lyrical and intimate album with new original compositions by Crispell, free playing and pieces by friends Arve Henriksen and Jayna Nelson.
