'Sings Live!' is a 14-song set culled from recordings of Colin Meloy's (The Decemberists' lead singer and songwriter) '06 US solo tour, and is released on UK-based Rough Trade Records.
By contrast to his almost bombastic indie-rock jangle of old, 'Sings Live!' presents Meloy in a stripped-down, acoustic setting, leading his audience on a spellbinding walk through his work thus far and providing a glimpse of new material.
'Colin Meloy Sings Live!' includes songs from his first band, Tarkio, as well as from a clutch of The Decemberists' albums, while, of the 13 Meloy originals, two are previously unreleased - "Dracula's Daughter" and "Wonder".
Along the way, he drops snippets of songs from The Smiths, Fleetwood Mac, Pink Floyd and REM, performs a version of the traditional folk song Barbara Allen and also captures ample good-natured between-songs banter. The cover features a portrait of Meloy, by Carson Ellis, the frequent and hugely talented Decemberists illustrator.
