At one time dubbed 'The Thin Man From West Plains', Porter Wagoner was born in Missouri in 1927 (or 1930, as other sources quote) and spent his youth immersed in the Depression and rural poverty of the 1930s. At an early age, Porter's father was crippled by arthritis and the need to work on the family farm meant that his education was severely curtailed. This compilation is particularly interesting as the first ten tracks date from the earliest days of his career, before he was an established recording star. The Hank Williams influence is unmistakable and they show a star-in-the making before he had carved out his own later flamboyant persona.
