Fanny Crosby had every reason, it seemed, to be bitter with her lot in life. Born of humble stock on 24th March, 1820, in Putnam County, New York State, baby Frances Jane (known affectionately as Fanny) gazed around her, aware of the colour and texture of her surroundings. Then tragedy struck! At six weeks old she developed an eye infection and the local, unqualified doctor was called. In error he prescribed a hot, mustard poultice to be placed on her inflamed eyes. This incorrect treatment blinded her for life.
