"Sublime and haunting. A new CD from the Ogen trio has been a long time coming, but worth the wait. This handsome album... acknowledges the pioneering role that the Ogens have played in commissioning and performing NZ music" (William Dart, NZ Herald)
Ahi features 6 works for Piano Trio from 5 New Zealand composers including 2007's Classical Album of the Year Award winner John Psathas.
The works are very accessible and diverse featuring dances, lullabies, environmental sounds, and digital effects. They are contemporary New Zealand compositions with great depth.
The Ogen Trio was formed in 1996 by three of New Zealand's leading musicians, pianist Katherine Austin, violinist Dimitri Atanassov, and cellist James Tennant. They have undertaken national tours under the auspices of chamber Music NZ, and appeared at all the leading NZ Chamber Music Festivals.
The Trio continues to develop its programming beyond the classical repertoire into contemporary works, and into expanded instrumental combinations, as heard in two of the compositions on this disc.
