Memorable melodies, experimental washes, plinking pianos, screaming guitars, naughty bass lines, bells, whistles and 3 different drummers... All packed into 'On the Down and In', the debut album from Auckland band, Dictaphone Blues.
The baby of multi-talented musician Edward Castletow (former member of Degrees.k, The Ruby Suns and on their world tour: The Brunettes), Dictaphone Blues has been warmly received by both live audiences and radio since forming in 2006. The live band (made up of members of The Reduction Agents, Heavy Jones Trio and The Ruby Suns) have charmed their way around Aotearoa - starting on Liam Finn's 'I'll be Lightening' tour - and the singles taken to radio so far have been well and truly swallowed whole... The infectious, summery jangle of "Taken Aback" spent two months in the 95bfm top 10 and several more in the Radioscope Alt Chart and now "Spooky Room" is getting similarly thrashed across the airwaves, introducing listeners to the psychedelic-pop element runs throughout the album.
'On the Down and In' is sure to be regarded as one of the best New Zealand albums of the year.
