Nordic magic: Altogether Edvard Grieg wrote 66 Lyric Pieces, romantic miniatures for piano in the tradition of Robert Schumann. Partly virtuosic, partly playable even for amateurs, they have enjoyed an extraordinary popularity that occasionally drew disapproval from Grieg's contemporaries. (Claude Debussy called them "pink bonbons filled with snow".) But these poetic character pieces with their typically Nordic flavour, inspired by fairy tales and observations of nature, are entirely unique in their heartfelt emotionality.
"(Adni) is probably better able to respond to Grieg's simplicity than many of his younger contemporaries because his own keyboard personality is so uncomplicated, so unidiosyncratic, so self-effacing. His tone is always as ingratiating as his phrasing is rounded. Provided all that is needed is a poised account of what is written on the lines, the results are nearly always enjoyable." (Gramophone)
