Fumiko Shiraga was born in Tokyo and has lived in Germany since she was a child. She studied under Detlef Kraus, Friedrich Wilhelm Schnurr, Malgorzata Bator and Vladimir Krainev at the Colleges of Music in Essen, Detmold and Hanover.
She has recorded for BIS since 1996 and has won worldwide acclaim for her series of piano concertos 'in disguise'. Her recordings of Chopin's piano concertos for piano and string quintet appeared in 1997, followed in 2000 by Beethoven's First and Second Concertos for the same instrumental forces. Her world première recording of solo piano music by Anton Bruckner, released in 2001, has been extremely well received by the international press. Fumiko Shiraga also records regularly for various German radio stations (NDR, BR, SR, HR). She has made guest appearances as a recitalist, chamber musician and soloist with orchestra in London, Budapest, Salzburg, Helsinki, Riga, Kyiv, Istanbul, Beirut, San José and at the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival. She has played in the Herkulessaal in Munich, the Brucknerhaus in Linz, the Casals Hall in Tokyo and in the Great Hall of the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow.
