'Magic Chairs' is a lush & gorgeous album, drawing the listener in with the breadth & depth of its musicality.
Since 2000, this Copenhagen-based group (plus an ever evolving roster of collaborators) has been quietly honing their craft, fusing left of centre electronic beats with grand orchestral flourishes.
On 'Magic Chairs' (their third album overall, but label debut for 4AD), Efterklang - a Danish word which more or less translates as "remembrance" - set about stripping back their own music to its basic core, recording tracks as a band and then adding orchestral elements & contributions from guest musicians.
'Magic Chairs' was mixed by British engineer & production whiz, Gareth Jones (Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds; Depeche Mode; Interpol; Mogwai; & Grizzly Bear), alongside the band's inhouse electronics guru, Mads Brauer.
The result is an intimate & immediate record that exudes a warmth that may very well appeal to fans of Arcade Fire; Cinematic Orchestra; Sigur Ros; Sufjan Stevens, plus others of that ilk.
"Efterklang's most recent release proves its sound to be as devastatingly endearing as we remembered, and this time with even more grit."
-CMJ
"Efterklang has casually drifted from the more overtly classical structures of its earliest work toward tighter rock songs, rendered with the elegance & precision of cut glass."
-PASTE
"On album highlight and opener, "The Modern Drift", loose, rattling drums puncture a canvas of pointillist piano & stretched strings."
-PITCHFORK
"Paired down to their essence, this distilled Efterklang is premium strength stuff."
