An exceptional debut album from Richard Setford and friends. Imagine glass blowing giants, detached murderers, dancing corpses, homeless drunks, downtrodden lovers...
"…songs of quiet introversion, subtle ambient & atmospheric pieces, alt-folk & mostly songs which have an upward trajectory… very smart stuff."
- Graham Reid, Elsewhere.co.nz
"Richie has one of those wonderfully diverse voices that can inhabit a different character with every melody - from soaring Fleet Foxes-esque folk to a dark Nick Cave baritone, melding whisps of Frank Sinatra & various Brit Rock masters to create a soundscape all of his own."
- Lydia Jenkin, NZ Musician Magazine
"…brooding lo-fi lush awkwardly perfect glory."
- Andrew Tidball, Cheese On Toast
Richard Setford is Bannerman and 'The Dusty Dream Hole' is Bannerman's debut album. Bannerman is a project conceived in the basement bedroom of a Western Springs flat in 2005 & focused on intensely visual & lyrically ambiguous songwriting.
A performer with Batucada Sound Machine, The Brood & formerly of the group One Million Dollars, as Bannerman, Setford is now focused on inhabiting a more personal world, one that can often be slightly unhinged, that can bring out the foulest or lightest of thought, sometimes within the same song.
Imagine glass blowing giants, detached murderers, dancing corpses, homeless drunks, downtrodden lovers; this is a world that is as confined or as free as the listener allows it to be.
'The Dusty Dream Hole' was self-produced, with mixing & mastering by Olly Harmer at The Lab. The album features the musicians Alistair Deverick (The Ruby Suns), Flip Grater, Oliver Emmet (Lisas Crawley Band), Finn Scholes (The Living Diamonds), Simon Turner (Ziko), Hadyn Godfrey (Opensouls), Wairere Iti, Andrew McDowell & Siobhanne Thompson.
Bannerman live features Richard Setford, Flip Grater, Oliver Emmet & Finn Scholes, with Cole Goodley (Pan Am/Pie Warmer) & Cass Mitchell (Cool Rainbows). This thoughtful bunch have been working hard in rehearsal & are now a compelling beast of swirling organs, lush harmonies, shimmering guitars, weaving horn lines & drunken outbursts.
In 2008 Bannerman released his first bedroom recordings as an EP, which was well received by media but unfortunately little heard outside of those circles. 'The Dusty Dream Hole' will surely see his music reach a wider audience, as it is an exceptional album.
