The violoncello played a much larger role in Robert Schumann's life than is generally known. As a pianist, he loved the big stringed instrument because it helped him to relax his right hand, which for a time was greatly strained by too much piano playing. As a composer, he occupied himself much less with the cello. His only original work for cello and piano is the Five Pieces in the Folk Style op. 102 from 1849. On Vol. 2 of our series featuring Schumann's chamber music the violoncellist Martin Ostertag and the pianist Kalle Randalu of Villa Musica present this composition and other works in impressive interpretations.
