These recordings emphasize what is characteristic about each symphony, but the following criteria nevertheless apply to the whole: a trimmer tone throughout in the tradition of Schubert (opposing all that is massive and pathos-laden), a rubato-rich, bar-line-free playing, and the working out of sacral, ritual moments.
When Mario Venzago begins a major project, then we can be certain that something extraordinary is in the making. Such was the case with his Schumann project, and the same now also applies to his radically new approach to the complete symphonies of Anton Bruckner: »This new recording intends to show that Bruckner did not write the same symphony nine times (as is often claimed), but that each one of his symphonies has its unique message for which the composer always created new musical principles and a constantly changing sound picture. It was therefore my wish to assign to each symphony a specific orchestra of very different size, culture, and tradition. Like every interpretation, the project A Different Bruckner captures a particular moment. These recordings emphasize what is characteristic about each symphony, but the following criteria nevertheless apply to the whole: a trimmer tone throughout in the tradition of Schubert (opposing all that is massive and pathos-laden), a rubato-rich, bar-line-free playing, and the working out of sacral, ritual moments.« And of this you can be sure: a grand listening adventure awaits you! The Basel Symphony Orchestra opens this edition series.
