Peter was just 26 when he recorded this, his first solo album after quitting Genesis. 'Peter Gabriel' was originally released in February 1977 and features the classic "Solsbury Hill" hit.
His debut release found Gabriel trying out a wide variety of styles, from barbershop quartets to orchestral epics. The work's best-known track, "Solsbury Hill," about Gabriel's exit from Genesis, is more joyous and direct than anything he'd done with his former band. It's one of the influential musician's most enduring songs and was recently revived by director Cameron Crowe for the movie 'Vanilla Sky'. Another highlight is the solemn ballad "Here Comes The Flood," with its memorable refrain: "Drink up dreamers / you're running dry." All told, the album easily proved that Gabriel had a future beyond Genesis.
