David Byrne and Fatboy Slim's Here Lies Love, the original cast recording of which was released on Nonesuch earlier this year, premiered at New York's Public Theater in April of last year and returned to the Public this spring. In a new review of the cast album, Broadway World calls it "thought-provoking pop-laden fun."
The album, featuring the original Public Theater cast, is "filled with beats that make you want to dance along with the music," says Broadway World's chief theater recordings critic David Clarke. "With the range of musical styles encapsulated on the recording, every track sounds fresh and original. Progressing through the dual-disc album, the listener is kept guessing as to what will come next and is constantly and pleasantly surprised." Clarke declares: "Here Lies Love is one of the best albums I've had the chance to experience since I began reviewing music for BroadwayWorld."
In the current production, as on the cast recording, Ruthie Ann Miles, whose "gorgeous vocalizations" Clarke cites in his review, plays Imelda Marcos, whose love for disco and club music served as the inspiration for the musical, telling the story of Filipina First Lady Imelda Marcos, retracing her meteoric rise to power and subsequent descent into infamy and disgrace at the end of the People Power Revolution.
