The breakthrough album that had hitherto been eluding Dr. John, the title of this record couldn't be more appropriate. Working with some of the finest musicians his New Orleans hometown had birthed including Allen Toussaint and The Meters, Mac Rebennack struck gold with In the Right Place in 1973.
Up until this point Dr. John had been somewhat of a musician's musician, but the singles "Right Place, Wrong Time" and "Such a Night" introduced him to a larger audience that had up until this point been mostly unaware of his talent. The latter song in particular become a career touchstone for him as it featured in Martin Scorsese's film The Last Waltz, a recording of The Band's final performance featuring luminaries Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Leon Russell and Neil Young.
A classic recording that highlights Dr. John's brand of New Orleans musical gumbo and an essential album in his vast catalogue.
