'The Ghost Of The Mountain' is the follow-up to Tired Pony's critically-acclaimed debut 'The Place We Ran From', which was released in 2010.
Tired Pony (Gary Lightbody, Peter Buck, Iain Archer, Richard Colburn, Scott McCaughey, Troy Stewart and producer/multi-instrumentalist Garret "Jacknife" Lee) were originally put together by Lightbody to realize his long-standing ambition of making an Americana album. However over a period of nine days in February/ March sequestered in Lee's Topanga Canyon studio the reality outgrew his vision and this second album shows a much wider range of textures and influences. "We were trying to soak up the Topanga canyon folk vibe but also bring the discordant Krautrock and weird synth-pop sound into it too", explains Buck. It's an album that glides effortlessly from soulful Americana to glam-influenced stomps to plaintive country introspection with lead single 'All Things All At Once' summing up the band's ability at injecting melancholic depth into effortlessly breezy sing-alongs.
Woven into the songs is the narrative of two characters dealing with an unforgiveable act that has changed both of their lives. Lightbody wrote about this same duo on 'The Place We Ran From' and that story continues here. "We had so much fun doing the first one and I had so much more to say on the characters", says Lightbody. The record also features contributions by guest vocalists, Bronagh Gallagher, Kim Topper and Minnie Driver. Driver provides the mesmerizing female voice on the album's climactic 'Your Way Is The Way Home'. It's a sunshine record with bleak undertones. "The record makes you think one thing and feel another," says Lightbody. Prepare to have your head and your heart pulled every which way.
