A renowned teacher and widely regarded by professionals as the finest violist of the twentieth century, the Scotsman William Primrose travelled all over the world, as soloist and chamber musician, playing with the greatest musicians of his time. His technique was such that he could play virtually anything at sight. Primrose brings an unprecedented level of virtuosity to this 1946 recording of the Walton Viola Concerto, the earliest of the composer's three concertos. His riveting 1944 recording of Berlioz's Harold in Italy, made after a short tour, is also notable for Koussevitzky's exciting conducting of an orchestra still full of French players at that time.

"Here are good transfers by Mark Obert-Thorn of Primrose's excellent Walton Concerto and the pioneering Harold in Italy played on the c1719 'Macdonald' Stradivari. …well enough played to be enjoyable." Gramophone
