"Catherine King's fresh voice and simplicity of line are all her own and she is very touching in the melancholy songs. The Rose Consort, lively enough in the galliards, also show their sensitivity to Dowland's doleful moods, notably in the famous Semper Dowland semper dolens, but also in the lament for Oliver Cromwell (not the famous Oliver Cromwell), played somberly on bass viol and lute. The two lute solos, very well played by Jacob Heringman, offer further contrast, and the whole programme is recorded most naturally." Penguin Guide
