"As a pupil of Kempff, Idil Biret has a fine understanding of this repertoire, although her approach is more muscular than Kempff's. Thus the first of the four Ballades opens with enticing lyrical feeling but has the most powerfully dramatic climax, to match the feeling of the Scottish ballad, Edward, on which it is based. The fourth Ballade is gravely beautiful and shows her at her finest. The Sonata opens commandingly and its lyrical side is well balanced. These performances are full of character.
