Although La Muette de Portici had already celebrated its fifth-hundredth performance in 1880, today it has been almost entirely forgotten and is infrequently produced. The work premiered in the original French at the Anhalt Theater in Dessau, April 2010, under the general music director Anthony Hermus and is now available on cpo.
"The strong cast is led by the famous Mexican singer, Diego Torre (Masaniello). He is a vibrant and strong tenor, whose power nicely fits his brave fisherman image...Hermus has given the listener a sensitive reading of Auber's score with admirable playing from the Anhaltische Philharmoni" (MusicWeb)
"[de la Torre's] singing exudes a notable confidence above the stave...[Hermus] and his excellent orchestra bring an appropriate vitality and dramatic fire to the proceedings." (International Record Review)
