One of the few and undoubtedly the biggest star drummers of the late 1950s and early 1960s, Sandy Nelson took full advantage of the popularity of instrumental rock, churning out a succession of hit albums. He was nothing if not prolific, with some eight albums appearing over the course of just eighteen months when he was at the height of his career, but the quantity did not detract from the quality of music that was on display. Utilising the top session musicians of the day, ably supported by producer and songwriter Ritchie Podolor, Drummin' Up A Storm kept that run going and represents Sandy at the very peak of his career, for the year after release he was to be involved in a serious motorcycle accident that resulted in the amputation of his right foot and part of his leg.
