On September 4 2004 Mariss Jansons conducted his first concert as chief conductor of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra at the Amsterdam Concertgebouw. This very successful performance was recorded on 5.0 surround DSD and is now available on a Hybrid Multichannel SACD on the Orchestra's own independent label RCO Live.
Mariss Jansons choice to perform Richard Strauss tone poem Ein Heldenleben at his first concert with his new orchestra is not an incidental one. Richard Strauss dedicated the piece to the orchestra, its musicians and its chief conductor Willem Mengelberg back in 1898. It was one of the earliest acclamations of the orchestra's artistic quality, and has been one of the orchestra's war-horses ever since.
Recorded Live at Concertgebouw Amsterdam on 4-6 September 2004
"Jansons achieves incredible depth in colouring, but the at times vertiginous beauty of the orchestral sound never aims to play to the gallery and is always at the service of a striking expression." - De Telegraaf
"Imaginative, colourful and full of expression: Ein Heldenleben has never sounded so compelling." - De Telegraaf
"A marvellous feeling for detail in Strauss' sensuous and voluptuously saturated soundwaves, that notwithstanding the energetic and boisterous tempi remain sparkling and transparent.." - NRC Handelsblad
"This great programmatic symphony has never sounded as serene or tragic as it does in this live performance…The playing is immaculate, the interpretation all-of-a-piece. In the core Karajan repertory, Jansons is simply unbeatable." Financial Times
