Suitable for General AudiencesKasper Holten's inaugural production as Director of Opera for The Royal Opera returns to Pushkin's verse novella to reveal the shadows of memory which haunt Tchaikovsky's lyric tragedy. Using doubles to suggest the paths taken, or not taken, by its two impulsive protagonists, Holten gives eloquent voice to the loss and regret that lies at the heart of Eugene Onegin. Simon Keenlyside and Krassimira Stoyanova bring both experience and dynamic energy to the pair of protagonists, while the youthful, 'heartrending' tenor of Pavol Breslik and the idiomatic sweep of Robin Ticciati's 'inspired' conducting (The Independent) were enthusiastically received at the premiere of this visually opulent staging.
Kasper Holten's first production since becoming Director of Opera at the Royal Opera House.
Conducted by Robin Ticciati - Music Director designate of Glyndebourne.
Outstanding cast led by Simon Keenlyside and Krassimira Stoyanova.
Extra features: Director's Commentary, and a Cast Gallery.
Gramophone Magazine DVD of the Month - December 2013
"Holten's principals break the heart: Krassimira Stoyanova's aching, ringing Tatyana embraces her youthful alter ego at the core of the Letter Scene; baritone Simon Keenlyside's 'old' Onegin wills tenor Pavol Breslik's handsome Lensky not to die...Ticciati mirrors the production's palpitations" BBC Music Magazine, Christmas Issue 2013 *****
