[ Sony RCA Classical Opera / 3 CD ]
Release Date: Tuesday 1 October 2013
Famed for her raptly floated pianissimi, Croatian-born soprano Zinka Milanov was the Met's leading lady for three decades until her 1966 farewell. Here she stars as Verdi's Ethiopian slave alongside Jussi Björling as a superbly heroic Radamès, full-toned Italian mezzo Fedora Barbieri as Amneris and the US-born Leonard Warren, probably the greatest Verdi baritone of his day, as Amonasro.
This release is taken from original Master Tapes.
Recorded 2 - 18 July 1955 in the Opera House, Rome
First issued as RCA Victor LM-6122
"It would be hard today to find Verdi singing of the quality heard on this Aida recording...an overall singing cast of this quality only comes round every other generation or two at the most. Add Mark Obert-Thorn's superb restoration of the mono sound that gives depth and presence and this recording of Aida should be part of any Verdi collection"
