With an inimitable sound best described as groove-based music, featuring tasteful soul-infused melodies from a host of guest vocalists, The Means are about to tattoo a teardrop onto the face of New Zealand music.
Three outstanding musicians have joined forces to create a project far-reaching in its scope and ambition. The Means is at once a band, a production unit, a burgeoning empire, and a philosophy
"Each one of these tracks has been approached as potential singles", states band member Abe Kunin. "So much so in fact, that the working titles for our first productions were affectionately dubbed 'Hit 1-6'".
Their debut single 'Say The Same', dropped in early 2013 was accompanied by a self-produced video created by the disturbingly talented Oliver Rose. The song is forward-thinking yet timeless, bookended by spoken words from the celebrated young poet Courtney Meredith, and utilizing a paradox of sonic aesthetics, organic and machine-like. Those wanting comparison may invoke the likes of Frank Ocean, SBTRKT, or Kanye West, but when combined with the clip's intimate, surreal, and sometimes morbid imagery, The Means create a persona all their own.
