Lise Lindstrom (Turandot), Marco Berti (Calaf), Eri Nakamura (Liu), Raymond Aceto (Timur), Orchestra & Chorus of the Royal Opera House, Henrik Nánási (conductor) & Andrei Serban (director)

Recorded live at the Royal Opera House, September 2014

Andrei Serban's spectacular and thrilling 1984 production of Puccini's final and grandest opera has long been a classic at the Royal Opera House. First filmed for BBC TV in the 80s, this new recording - of its fifteenth revival - is in stunning HD and makes this famous production available for the first time on DVD and Blu-ray. The release will rightfully take its place alongside the outstanding Royal Opera Puccini DVDs of La Bohème, Tosca (on EMI) and Il Trittico. American Lise Lindstrom is one of the very few contemporary Turandots who can genuinely sing this 'killer' role, and is supported by a touching Liù from Japanese soprano Eri Nakamura and an unashamedly Italianite Calaf from Marco Berti. The young Hungarian conductor Henrik Nánási directs the large orchestra and all-important chorus.

Extra features: Turandot - An Introduction, Behind the Masks and a cast gallery.

Running time: 125 minutes

Subtitles: EN/FR/DE/ES/IT/KO

"Serban's galvanically colourful staging has survived with remarkable vigour...Lindstrom is pretty much the ideal Ice Princess: her voice one of steely intensity...Berti as Calaf has a clarion voice and dignified presence...Nakamura's Liu is equally fine...The all-important chorus sings with vibrant energy, and the dancers are creepily impressive." (BBC Music 5 Stars)

"Long one of my favourite productions of anything...Serban struck a healthy blow against the ultra-ornate Zeffirellian approach with a look that's often as dark as the heart of the opera's Chinese fairy-tale princes" (Gramophone)
