The Z-Machines robots were the result of a project in Japan to create a music performing system that could play music far more complex than even the most advanced human musicians could ever physically be capable of.
Squarepusher was one of a number of composers asked to develop music for the Z-Machines to perform and the result was the track 'Sad Robot Goes Funny', an intricate work that took full advantage of the possibilities of working with a guitarist with 78 fingers and a drummer with 22 arms.
The EP 'Music for Robots' includes this piece as well as four additional pieces. This is a stirring and complex work as one would expect from a collaboration of this magnitude.
