"When it comes to serving music by coupling pianistic brilliance with a special sense of tone and interpretive intelligence, then Korstick is in
his element". Thus FonoForum, and truly, whether we have produced and released works by unknown composers or the standard literature with him, Michael Korstick has always proven to be an individual interpreter and created new benchmark recordings. Among critics and informed citizens of the piano world, this native of Cologne has for quite some time enjoyed renown as one of Germany's leading pianists. The critics have repeatedly highlighted the outstanding balance between brilliant virtuosity and musical interiorization negotiating between a strongly developed personality and uncompromising loyalty to the works as the characteristic trait of his playing. We thus have decided, by way of exception, to release Schubert's sonatas on two CDs with this extraordinary interpreter. For the
rerelease of Schubert's Sonata in B flat major on the second CD, Korstick
even won the Echo-Klassik prize in the category 'Solo Recording of the
Year' in 2005. In his occupation with Schubert's sonatas Korstick has not
made things easy for himself: "In genuinely great and significant music the
interpretive end of the flagpole is never reached, and Schubert will always
be a 'current' composer, for his music not only is anchored in its times
but also points beyond them; it is universal in that it says everything
without expressing it - for the player and the listener, a never-ending
challenge, strenuous and at the same time rewarding" (Michael Korstick).
