Was Hector Berlioz writing music to get over his obsession with his distant love, Harriet Smithson? Was this symphony his way of saying goodbye, or even seeking revenge? Or was it instead his impassioned valentine to a woman he could not forget?
In 1827, Berlioz saw Harriet Smithson for the first time, playing Ophelia in a production of Hamlet. Hopelessly smitten, he turned his entire life upside down to meet her. Frantic months turned into years when he suddenly heard rumors about Harriet and another man. Believing himself cured, he wrote a 'fantastic' symphony complete with a special theme, the idée fixe, to represent his former obsession.
Classical music expert Michael Tilson Thomas headlines this documentary examination of composer Hector Berlioz's Symphonie fantastique. Thomas establishes the fact that the composition almost singlehandedly defined the Romantic movement within the classical repertoire, with its overwhelming outpouring of emotion. He also documents the original source of inspiration for the work: Berlioz's obsessive desire to win the heart of an actress. As an added bonus, the program features a full concert performance of the work by The San Francisco Symphony. ~ Nathan Southern, All Movie Guide
"The images, interviews, and research contained in each hour-long documentary had me absorbed throughout, whetting my appetite for each work's complete performance. Interviews with SFSO musicians - who explain the peculiarities of Berlioz's string writing, or what it's like tor those who grew up in the Soviet Union - are among the most revealing moments in the documentaries. The Berlioz and Shostakovich performances come from live concerts, the former at Davies Hall, the orchestra's home base, the latter from a 2007 Albert Hall Proms."
