The Brook Street Band celebrates its 20th anniversary as a leading light and champion of the music of Handel with another imaginative album that completes the ensemble's survey of Handel's Trio Sonatas for two violins and continuo. A bonus is an arrangement for two violins and basso continuo of the overture to Handel's oratorio Esther.
"[the quartet] play with sensual directness and a vividly attuned awareness of harmonic contours in the early F major Sonata…despite being one of Handel's best chamber compositions, this gets somewhat ignored by recording artists so it is pleasing to hear The Brook Street Band's shapely account…there is nothing to quibble over in [their] masterly performances" Gramophone
"the Brook Street Band celebrates its 20th birthday with this release of the composer's lesser-known trio sonatas - and if that sounds dry, the performances are anything but...[They] approach everything with a spring in their step, relishing the harmonic crunches and keeping everything vital and vivacious."
