Benny Goodman will probably always be the most famous representative of white swing, which is different from black swing in the subtle way it includes harmonic elements from European music, and particularly classical music. His dynamic style and technique brimmed with innovations which were copied by many others after him, not only clarinetists, but also a number of saxophonists. He helped musicians like Gene Krupa, Lionel Hampton and Charlie Christian bloom and took the risk of bringing jazz out of the ghetto of clubs and thrusting it onto the most prominent stage venues in America.
