Buddy Collette started his jazz career early, learning the alto sax by the age of 12 and going on to form a band with his lifelong friend Charles Mingus. He also went on to master the flute and clarinet, both of which are often heavily featured in his work. He began as a be-bopper but made the usual moves through the jazz eras and even indulged in some chamber jazz with guitarist Jim Hall and pianist Fred Katz. Other fine musicians Collette played with include Eric Dolphy, Chico Hamilton, Lucky Thompson, Charles Lloyd, Sonny Criss, Dexter Gordon and James Newton. He even played in the resident band on the Groucho Marx TV show.
