Two years ago Gold Panda made a series of trips across Japan with photographer Laura Lewis to gather visuals and field recordings for what was supposed to be "a sight and sound documentary" which is still in progress, but in turn, the trip itself sparked the inspiration for his latest album, 'Good Luck And Do Your Best'.
'Good Luck And Do Your Best' is decidedly brighter, more low-key, and less dance-oriented than Gold Panda's previous outing 'Half of Where You Live', yet it captures the short-lived exuberance of the photographer's golden hour. When the sun is on the cusp of setting, if you're lucky, streetscapes in Japan will be awash in an exceedingly warm golden light. It makes whatever you photograph seem more buoyant, colourful, and evanescent. That same feeling has been captured into 'Good Luck And Do Your Best'.
The album's title was inspired by a cab ride Gold Panda had in Japan "...As we got out, the Japanese taxi driver's parting words to us as we left, were 'good luck and do your best.'"
'Good Luck And Do Your Best' was recorded at Gold Panda's home in Chelmsford and mixed in Luke Abbott's studio.
