This is the story of the final days of Robert Maxwell, a modern ruler whose flamboyant lifestyle lead to his demise - a media mogul who ultimately succumbed to his own ambition.
It's the early 1990s and Maxwell's media empire includes some of the most famous names in the media landscape: Macmillan Publishing to national newspapers like the Daily Mirror and the New York Daily News. His financial director witnesses Maxwell's financial shenanigans during his fierce rivalry with fellow mogul Rupert Murdoch as he optimistically pursues his glamorous secretary Andrea Martin and alienates his wife. By the end the previously omnipotent Maxwell, who was able to have bankers, suppliers and competitors dancing to his tune, was powerless, held in contempt by his bankers and employees - his business in tatters, he ultimately pays the price for living it large.
The life and shenanigans of Australian businessman Robert Maxwell became headline news when, after his mysterious death at sea, it was alleged he had embezzled millions from his employees' pension funds to keep his ailing businesses afloat and became one of the biggest frauds of the time. In this acclaimed BBC production, David Suchet (AGATHA CHRISTIE'S POIROT) provides a brilliantly accurate and outrageous portrayal of the disgraced mogul - a role which won him an Emmy Award for Best Actor.
