The front cover of The Who's debut album, My Generation, contains an image that defines the era almost as much as the music inside. Draped around John Entwistle's shoulders is a jacket fashioned out of a Union Flag. Nowadays, you can find this emblem on coffee mugs, bed pillows, T-shirts and every other item of clothing imaginable. In December 1965, though, when My Generation first appeared, such was the Union Jack's reputation, several Savile Row tailors refused The Who's request to turn it into a jacket. "They thought they'd go to jail," claimed Roger Daltrey.
The Who's surly demeanour and brazen appropriation of the symbol of state is the best advert possible for My Generation. It's an album that sounds like it looks: terse, confrontational and full of youthful angst and energy. Unsurprisingly, making the album was a process riven with conflict.
My Generation was the product of a battle of wills: between bold new ideas and pop music tradition. By the time it arrived, The Who's Union Jack was as metaphorically tattered and bloodied as if it been through two world wars.
The album was produced by Shel Talmy and first issued in the UK by Brunswick Records in December 1965, and in the US, under the title 'The Who Sings My Generation', in April 1966. The UK release featured an iconic front sleeve, taken at Surrey Docks in south east London by Decca Records' photographer David Wedgbury, featuring an aerial view of the four members of The Who gazing skywards, a pose that other bands copied in almost perfect pastiches years later. In the US, American Decca attempted to jump on the British Invasion bandwagon by using a different yet similarly iconic Wedgbury shot featuring The Who with London's most famous clock tower, Big Ben, in the background.
